Congratulations to new Mayor-elect John Lowndes, who was unchallenged during election qualifying that ended at noon today. He will be sworn in during the April 12 City Council meeting at City Hall, 1776 Independence Lane.
John currently serves as vice-chair of Maitland’s Charter Review Commission. He held a seat on the City Council for six years. Prior to that, he served on the Maitland Planning and Zoning Commission, the Maitland Community Redevelopment Agency, and the Maitland Electric Power Advisory Board. He also helped found the Dommerich Foundation Fund, which raises money for public school improvements.
John was born and raised in Central Florida, attending Winter Park Junior High School and graduating from Edgewater High School. After earning degrees at both Florida State University (B.A.) and the University of Florida (M.A.), John went on to get his law degree at American University’s Washington College of Law. Pursuing a career in federal Indian law, John spent several years with firms in D.C., Portland, and Anchorage, gaining experience in the areas of government contracts, environmental issues, health care, employment law, and tribal governance.
When John and his wife, Julie, settled in Maitland to raise their family, John joined the Orange County Attorney’s office, working in land use, construction, utilities, and local government law. Currently, John serves as in-house counsel to a hospital and environmental healthcare corporation.
John and Julie have three children.
