Planner III Earns AICP Designation

Harris Berns-Cadle, Planner III, has earned the American Institute Certified Planners, or AICP, certification after recently passing the exam.  The AICP website states that the AICP designation is an “independent verification of planners’ qualifications.”

Harris committed at least 200 hours working towards the AICP certification, which entails an application and exam.

“Planners are expected and, in most cases, are required to have the certification,” said Harris.  “Planners with the certification are bound to a code of ethics and are considered experts in the field.”

The eligibility requirements for the AICP credential are rigorous.   The AICP requires applicants to obtain a graduate degree from a Planning Accreditation Board-accredited school and have at least two years of planning experience in the workforce.

“The application process requires individuals to answer three essay questions which are based on work experience,” said Harris. “After the application process, I studied planning theory, history, law, ethics, and functional areas.  The pass rate is around 50 percent.  I failed by one point the first time around, but passed the second time.”

“It is amazing how good I felt after passing the exam,” said Harris.

Congratulations, Harris!
