City of Maitland - Press Releases
Press Releases
Maitland, FL.  -- (August 20, 2002) -- Just as "schools out for the summer," the City of Maitland is planning an ice skating party to welcome our children back to school at the end of this summer.

The RDV Sportsplex Ice Den and the City of Maitland, are hosting a "Welcome Back to School" Ice Skating Party on Thursday, August 29th from 6 to 9 pm at the RDV Sportsplex in Maitland.  Using both the Olympic and NHL sized ice rinks at the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den, the event will not only cool off kids during the heat of August, but also will be a fundraiser for the various PTA organizations at schools serving Maitland's children.

"This community-wide party is going to be a fun time.  The Maitland Police Department, assisted by the Maitland Men's Club, and City Staff Members will grill hot dogs and hamburgers.  The Maitland Fire Department will display fire fighting and life rescue equipment.  There will be various games, such as a moonwalk, for younger children, and a DJ spinning tunes," said Maitland City Councilman Tom Holley.

Thanks to the generosity of the RDV Sportsplex, PTAs of each school will receive all of the money raised from the charges for ice skating.  When a student purchases a $5 ticket to ice skate, which includes skate rental, the entire $5 will be returned to the PTA of the school, which that student attends.   "We are having each student identify his/her school when she/he purchases the $5 ice skating ticket, and based on that, money will flow back to the PTAs," said Tonya Elliott, the City of Maitland public information officer.

The City has invited students and friends of Maitland Middle School, Dommerich Elementary and Lake Sybelia Elementary schools, Hebrew Day School, The Park Maitland School, Maitland Montessori School, and The Summit Charter School.  The City has delivered flyers to all the schools to get the flyers home in the backpacks at the schools and pre-sell ice skating tickets.  Over 3,000 children attend these schools, and we are excited about a big turnout of students, friends, and their families," commented Ms. Elliott.

Event sponsors, RDV Sportsplex Ice Den, Sprint, Century National Bank, and the City of Maitland are paying the costs of the event.  "We're fortunate to have such positive corporate sponsors in Maitland.  Our partnership with Maitland's business community is one of the keys to the Maitland success story," said Councilman Holley.
