RON BLOCKER, ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT SWEATING IT OUT IN MAITLAND
Maitland, FL. --(April 5, 2002)  Ron Blocker, Orange County Public Schools Superintendent, will be joining the community volunteer planting event hosted by the City of Maitland at Dommerich Elementary School on Saturday April 6, 2002 from 9 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  Also on hand will be a massive participation effort of Maitland community members assisting Mr. Blocker with the volunteer planting efforts.

The event is an unprecedented co-operative partnership between the City of Maitland, Orange County Public Schools, and the residents of Maitland.  The planting will utilize volunteer members from the community to enhance the perimeter landscaping around the school creating a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere for the children of the community.

The City of Maitland created the landscape plans, and City grounds maintenance staff cleared the area to get it ready for the planting, the City ordered and paid for the materials needed to replant the school, and sought volunteers from the community to help with the planting.

"When Superintendent Ron Blocker comes out on a hot Saturday morning and swings a shovel to plant trees with Maitland volunteers, it says a lot about who he is and his commitment to our children.  I like a guy who is willing to sweat to make our public schools better," said Maitland Councilman Tom Holley.

This project marks the fourth school improvement task accomplished by the City. Already completed were upgrades to the athletic fields at Maitland Middle School and Dommerich Elementary School, as well as upgraded perimeter landscaping for Maitland Middle School.  Plans also include upgrades at Lake Sybelia Elementary School at a later date.

The planting will take place from 9 a.m. to noon.  Lunch will be provided for those volunteering to help with this co-operative project.
