City of Maitland - Press Releases

Maitland, FL. --(September 26, 2001)-- The City of Maitland’s Fire and Building Department is hosting Fire Prevention Week, from October 7th to October 13th.  In honor of this awareness week, The Building Division will be hosting Fire Safety Day in the Park on October 6th, 2001 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Fire Prevention Week has its roots in the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred on October 9, 1871. This tragic fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2000 acres in 27 hours.  Due to this tragedy, the National Fire Protection Association began Fire Prevention Week to raise public awareness in an effort to save lives.

This year’s theme  “Cover the Bases & Strike Out Fire” brings together one of America’s favorite pastimes, Baseball, and fire safety lessons to “strike out” the risks of home fires, stated Maitland Fire Marshall, Dennis Marshall.  “This program encourages families to learn cooking, heating, and electrical safety along with planning and practicing fire drills in their homes”, continued Mr. Marshall.
Fire Safety Day in the Park will include many activities including:  Rides in one the City’s Fire Engines, free handouts for children and adults, demonstrations of fire extinguishers, Child Care Seat Safety Checks, and door prizes.

Call the Fire Marshall at 407-536-6228 for additional information on the Fire Prevention Week activities.
