“FREE COURSE OFFERED TO TEACH RESIDENTS TO HANDLE EMERGENCY DISASTER SITUATIONS AND SAVE LIVES”
Maitland, FL. --(September 4, 2001)-- The City of Maitland’s Fire Department wants Maitland residents, commuters, and city employees to know how to handle emergency disaster situations.  The class is free of charge to those who live or work within the City of Maitland.  The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes will begin on Wednesday, September 26, 2001 concluding on Wednesday, November 14, 2001.  The course is an eight-week process that takes place every Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Maitland Civic Center, located at 641 S. Maitland Ave.

The course covers preliminary disaster preparedness information, fire extinguisher handling, CPR training, first aid instruction, incident command including triage, light rescue using small tools, a hands on mock disaster section, and the graduation ceremony.   The highlight of the course is week seven where course participants get “hands on” experience with a “real-life” mock disaster.  During this staged disaster participants must use the CPR, first aid, triage, small tools, and fire extinguisher training learned to rescue some 25 artistically made-up victims, combat a contained fire, while handling several flash bang incidents.  The purpose of this course is to teach residents how to handle a crisis situation until the fire department and emergency response team can get to the scene.

“This is a great way for residents to become empowered to handle disaster situations within their families and their communities,” commented Maitland Fire Chief Dan Hardester.  “We are extremely proud to be able to offer this free of charge service to the community,” continued Hardester.

Those interested in the CERT program should call 407-539-6227, or drop them an e-mail at MFD@ci.maitland.fl.us. to register.
