City of Maitland - Press Releases
Press Releases
Maitland, FL. --(October 10, 2000)-- The City of Maitland’s Fire and Building Department is hosting Fire Prevention Week, from October 9th to October 14th.  In honor of this awareness week, The Building Division will be hosting several programs in all Maitland area public and private schools.

Fire Prevention Week has its roots in the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred on October 9, 1871. This tragic fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2000 acres in 27 hours.  Due to this tragedy, the National Fire Protection Association began Fire Prevention Week to raise public awareness in an effort to save lives.

“Public awareness is a way for us to help inform citizens about preventing fires in their homes,” stated Maitland Fire Marshall, Dennis Marshall.  “This is another great way for us to give back to our community,” continued Mr. Marshall.

Call the Fire Marshall at 407-536-6228 for additional information on the Fire Prevention Week activities.

The City of Maitland is a residential and business community that enjoys the advantages and intimacies of a small town community conveniently located less than 30 minutes from metropolitan Orlando.  On the horizon is the completion of the proposed Cultural Corridor, a special district within the city designed to emphasize and promote Maitland’s historical and cultural identity.  Maitland planners envision maintaining a healthy, clean environment that’s sustained, progressive and carefully planned.
