The Maitland Police Department Citizens Police Academy can help you discover this different world, the world of Law Enforcement. We will let you inside our Police culture and show you our duties and tactics. You will be among a select group of people outside of Law Enforcement who actually know how Police Officers think and react. Let us welcome you into this fascinating world.
What is the Citizens Police Academy?
The Citizens Police Academy (CPA) is comprised of citizens from all backgrounds and professions with a common goal, to learn how the Maitland Police Department works.
Do I have to be a resident of Maitland?
Not at all, most Police Departments have a CPA but Maitland's CPA focuses on the Maitland Police Department. Anyone is welcome to attend.
What is the criteria to join?
Must be over 21 years of age, have a valid drivers license and never been arrested.
Who runs the CPA?
Maitland Police Department personnel run the CPA, as well as provide the instruction sessions.
What will I learn at the CPA?
Every aspect of Police work. You will become familiar with the duties of Patrol Officers, Detectives, SWAT teams, dispatch, the training division, the K-9 Officer and the various functions of administration. Most importantly, you will gain valuable insight into understanding Police Officers and why they respond the way they do
Tell me about the schedule:
The meetings take place every Thursday evening from 6:30 to 9:30 and will run for 10 weeks.
Will I carry a gun?
Of course not, but one of the lessons covers safety and control of guns.
Will I get to ride with Police Officers?
Absolutely, during the academy you will participate in a "ride-a-long", where you ride with a Police Officer during one of their shifts.
What happens when I graduate?
You will be eligible to attend our CPA Alumni functions, ride-a-long with an officer whenever you like (subject to officer availability) and assist with various city functions. You will also have the benefit of knowing more about the Police Department that serves you.
