Forum 6 Summary The transportation solutions proposed for the downtown area are intended to address the large volume of fast moving vehicles through the Town Square area. The master plan connects Maitland Avenue to Orlando Avenue by a one-lane, one-way round-about. This configuration is intended to deter motorists that have alternate possible routes to use to get through the City of Maitland and to slow the traffic that
must use this intersection to get to their final destinations. It is the intention of this design to force cut-through traffic back onto the main roads and create a pedestrian friendly downtown area. The reduction of the width of the roadway allows a safer crossing to the businesses located around the central park and creates a easier means for the pedestrian traffic to utilize both the north and south side of the town square project. On-road parking is also proposed for the road design. This will not only supply closer parking around the City Hall and shops but will also aid in the slowing of traffic through the town center area.
Additional improvements are proposed with this design. Independence Lane will be extended from the City Hall round-about to George Avenue. This will allow access to the parking garage, businesses and the new Public Safety Building. Also Maitland Avenue will be reconfigured to include round-abouts at the intersections of Packwood Avenue and George Avenue. The proposed traffic calming devices will house landscape and sculpture that will tie the Town Square project to the adjoining Cultural Corridor District.
