Design Issues
- City Hall must be in center of park (option A)
- Open up views of park from 17/92
- Visual Connection Down Horatio
- Open views from Orlando good on axis
- Use CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) standards
- Provide public facilities even if city hall is not in park
- Create a 'Snap shot' view of the Town Square from 17/92
Fountain
- Main fountain should not be interactive
- Separate grand and interactive fountains-conflict with adults and loud children
- Liability of interactive fountain
- Research safety on interactive fountain
- Concern about safety of interactive fountain near traffic
- Use seat wall or other feature to create a barrier for safety
- Locate fountain in center of pedestrian intersection in Option A
- Interactive fountain should be in center of pedestrian crossing in center of park
- Create an interactive fountain around the grand fountain
- Interactive fountain might not be appropriate in Town Square - maybe locate in Lake Lily park
- Grand fountain should not be too large so it fights the Town Hall - scale needs to be appropriate to complement Town Hall
- Interactive fountain would be a destination and should not be a focal point, it should be a side feature, it will activate the park as people make use of it.
- Interactive fountain at the entrance to the park will support Maitland's 'Family' or 'Bedroom' community image. Best community around.
- Fountain at entry can be a distracting element of the entry feature.
Area in Front of the Town Hall (Option A)
- Design a feature in the center of the pedestrian intersection in front of Town Hall
- Use a fancy paving design in center / mosaic
- Use a flower bed in center
- Add seats around flower bed in center
- Locate a flag pole in the center
- Focal element may not be necessary in center of park with Town Hall
- Keep lawn area in front of Town Hall open in contrast to the surrounding development
- Provide shaded and sunny areas
- Leave lawn open as a dramatic center of Maitland
- Add diagonal walks across green to Town Hall to avoid "cow paths"
- Create attractive pedestrian entry points to the park
Promenade
- 16' width good
- 16' walk ideal due to ability to close off Horatio and use the street for events
- 22' width is too much pavement
- 22' with is good with Option A
Historical
- Locate historical elements in Town Square
- Incorporate with monuments but do not use at grand fountain
- Capture/incorporate historical elements
- Create an elevated boardwalk type feature along train tracks with a platform
Park Name
- Use Maitland w/ name
- Use Ellipse w/ name
- Maitland Town Center
- Maitland Promenade
- Maitland Town Green
- Not Hill Square
- Name after family & people of Maitland
- Maitland Hill Square
- Memorial Park
- Use Hill historic name in linear park in Town Square instead of the central park
- Maitland Green or Maitland Town Green
- Maitland Town Square (the name "square" is familiar to people)
- Maitland Downtown Park
Landscaping
- Create an Arboretum - use various types of trees - add markers/labels identifying tree types
- Use additional landscaping other than trees
- Protect existing mature trees
- Use smaller trees in front to open views to park from 17/92
Lighting
- Lighting should be pedestrian scale for promenade and roads in town square
- Night lighting should be dramatic
Other
- Compliment Architecture of City Hall & Architectural continuity
- Traffic roundabout should help to organize the Post Office traffic - review patterns
- Outdoor rooms with different themes around park as alternative to central located feature
- Activities can change throughout the seasons
- Use of Center by visitors outside Maitland
- Restrict dogs from the Town Square area
- Need a dog park in Maitland
