"Close your eyes and try to remember a town or a place you visited that made you feel alive and whole, a town that had its own unique and distinct pattern.

A question might arise when you think of this place. What exactly was the status of what made you feel alive and whole? In what frame of mind, and with what intention might the individuals or, as a society, thought of as a first step to make that place have in it those things that made us all feel alive and whole.

One would doubt very much whether anyone could think of a real town that didn't have a main street... a park... a city hall... police/fire station... a bank... post office... individual shops... special events. We might call these things "patterns of life."
